The Gift of Trail Mix

ON THE TRAIL

Who doesn't love a good trail mix on a hike? Anytime I can link the outdoors, food, and art, I call it a good day. Throw in thoughtful packaging, and it's even better!

During annual staff holiday cookie swaps, I found myself putting just as much thought, if not more, into the packaging as I would into the content. My newest gift idea is Trail Mix. As Alaska starts to awaken with Spring fever, we are all anticipating getting out on the trail. Consider making your favorite recipe of trail mix and packaging it for your friends as energizing spring gifts!

My favorite recipe might alter from most. I start by omitting the pretzels, Wheat Chex, and other detritus that I pick around in standard trail mix packs. I only include the items I like; Honey Nut Cheerios, Seasoned Rice Chex, Peanuts, Dried Strawberries (Dried Bananas). I swap out the classic M&M's for Dark Chocolate covered Goji Berries, providing that superfood immune system boost coated in a delicious chocolate coating. Goji berries are great for eyes, healthy skin, combating cancer, stabilizing blood sugar, depression, anxiety, sleep, immunity boost! With all those positives, it's easy to omit M&M's.

NOTE: The strawberries can lose their crunchiness if you put them in the mix to sit. To obtain a longer shelf life consider exchanging the strawberries for banana chips.
